What is eyelid surgery in Turkey?
Eyelid surgery or blepharoplasty is a cosmetic surgery provides enhances the eyelids' texture.
Eye lis procedure is performed by a plastic surgeon or an ophthalmologist. The best candidate for eyelid surgery has ptosis of the upper eyelid, dark circles, or skin looseness and fine lines on the eye area. It covers problems like impaired vision due to the obstruction of the upper eyelid and signs of aging to give the face a youthful look. The surgery involves the excision or redistribution of skin, fat, and muscle tissue around the eyes, and on average, the operation takes between 1 to 3 hours using local or general anesthesia. Eyelid surgery is also offered in Turkey and is available to many people, and the quality of service is quite good and is also rather affordable.
Who is suitable for blepharoplasty?
I perform eyelid surgery, especially for my patients who have the following features. My patients who apply to me for the operation have the features in the 1st and 2nd items.
Individuals with Ptosis (Drooping Eyelids)
In patients with ptosis, a-upper lid droops over the eye and hampers vision.
This condition is caused by aging, heredity, or other diseased states of the muscles and/or nerves innervating the eyelids.
Patients with excess skin:
Patients with the feeling of skin redundancy over the upper or lower eyelid surgery that results in droopiness and influences the normal position of the eyelid. This can make it troublesome, become red or sore, and sometimes affect vision.
Individuals with under-eye Bags
This is especially so for those candidates who will have apparent subcutaneous bags beneath the eyes resulting from the herniation of fat. This is a result of aging, heredity, or through some activities that people engage in such as ignoring sleep and experiencing stress.
Patients with Eyelid Puffiness
Patients with swelling of the eyelids resulting from fatty tissues. From these, it predisposes someone to look tired or quite old.
People with fine wrinkles and lines
People with thin skin and creases showing at the lower eyelids, where the surgery is useful.
Individuals with functional concerns
Patients with functional problems due to their skin and fat, for example; when they have problems wearing glasses or contact lenses or rash due to folds of skin.
General health requirements
The target is often ideal in the sense that there are no major health issues, particularly those of ocular significance. Everyone, particularly those who smoke, as smoking affects how the cut heals. Those who have set reasonable goals and realistic expectations concerning the procedures involved in the operation.
What are the benefits of eyelid surgery?
Eyelid surgery benefits go beyond the conservative area of the face but also serve a functional purpose. On the scientific side, it improves eyesight by eliminating the skin that tends to hang over the eyes and blurs vision. It also helps minimize the appearance of 'bags' under the eyes through the elimination or relocation of blobs of fat. It makes the skin around the eyes firm and elastic thus reducing the effects of facial lines such as the fine lines and the wrinkles. Apart from irritations caused by the excess skin moving over the eyelids, blepharoplasty relieves discomfort as well. In general, the surgery gives the patient a younger, fresher look, which enhances their morale besides the eyes’ utility.
How do I prepare for eyelid surgery?
I make some recommendations to my patients who apply to me for eyelid surgery and want to have surgery. These preparations, which I have quoted below and which I want to be done before the operation, will minimize the possible eyelid surgery side effects and complications that may occur both during and after the operation.
Firstly, organize an initial appointment with your eyelid surgery
to explain your wishes and questions. Specific blood tests and imaging like X-rays should be done to examine your health status. You must tell your doctor about any other medications you are using; this is because certain medications such as blood thinners are likely to be discontinued before the operation as a way of minimizing the likelihood of bleeding. Refrain from having anything by mouth after midnight the day of surgery and stay away from substances containing caffeine before the surgery to spare from the complications arising from the use of anesthesia. Also, stop drinking alcohol and smoking at least two weeks before the surgery, as these are not suitable for the process of wound healing and carry certain risks during the procedure. It is better to check eyelid surgery before and after photos. By following these steps you can well prepare yourself and prepare for your eyelid surgery.
How is eyelid surgery performed?
As a surgeon, I follow the eyelid surgery steps below for better eyelid surgery results. I approach both upper and lower eyelid procedures as shown below.
Upper Eyelid surgery:
- Anesthesia: For optimum comfort during the surgery, I either give local anesthetic with sedation or general anesthetic depending on the individual’s desires.
- Incision: I then use a fine blade to cut the initial redundant fold of the upper eyelid. This placement assists in masking any possible scarring spots, which is vital in the therapy process.
- Tissue Removal/Adjustment: Then, I delicately fold or relocate the skin, fat, and muscle in the area that requires the surgery. This step is important for the operated area to look smooth and to resemble the natural appearance of the upper eyelid in youthful individuals.
- Closure: I carefully stitch the wound, taking care to use very thin and smooth suture material that will produce minimal scarring and enhance the wound healing process.
Lower Eyelid Surgery:
- Anesthesia: Similar to that of the upper eyelid, I anesthetize the lower eyelid area using local anesthesia with or without sedation or even general anesthesia.
- Incision: There are two ways I normally approach this; a subειοicular incision that is located just below the lower lash line or a transconjunctival incision that is made inside the lower eyelid. This is advantageous in that it provides an ability to gain access to the underlying tissues and no scarring is evident.
- Fat Repositioning/Removal: To diminish under-eye bags and puffiness, I delicately redistribute or eliminate only as much subcutaneous tissue as necessary to give the face a renewed and rejuvenated look.
- Skin and Muscle Adjustment: If needed, I also take out or suture redundancies of the skin and muscle that would contribute to the improved appearance of the lower eyelid area, making it smoother and firmer.
- Closure: The incision is then sutured with fine sutures or proper skin glue to minimize any scarring and to give a more natural look.
Post-surgery care:
- Application of Ointment and Bandages: After the surgery, I apply an ointment to keep the area moist and dressing to shield the incisions from further harm.
- Recovery Instructions: I educate the patient fully on how to reduce swelling and bruising in addition to giving general advice on the matter. Other measures are that patients should avoid using ice on the affected part and head positioning should be done in such a way that it aids in healing.
- Follow-up Appointments: As for the follow-up, I visit the patient three to four times to check on the progress and ensure that there is no issue with the sutures if they should be sutured.
How to take care after eyelid surgery?
I recommend to my patients the following critical steps:
- Keep the head elevated: You should rest with at least your head above the level of the heart for at least a week to lessen inflammation and allow the wound to heal.
- Use cold compresses: One must use cold spoons to the area of surgery at least for the first 48 hours to help reduce inflammation and blacking.
- Avoid strenuous activities: Avoid lifting heavy objects, and bending or performing strenuous exercises for at least 2 weeks to avoid Increased blood flow and swelling.
- Follow medication instructions: Ensure that one follows all prescribed medication including antibiotics and pain medication to avoid getting an infection and to reduce pain.
- Protect your eyes: These should be worn with dark glasses to protect the eyes from both sun and wind, and one should not rub his or her eyes.
- Attend follow-up appointments: At least, ensure all the follow-up appointments are honored to assess the rate of healing and any worry that may be present.
- Pain management: Take paracetamol and other drugs that may help to reduce pain as advised by the doctor. Do not take aspirin or ibuprofen, because these medicines thin the blood and can cause bleeding.
- Avoid makeup: Avoid using eye makeup even if it is just a simple wash until your surgeon allows it, usually after two weeks.
- Avoid smoking and alcohol: Do not smoke and avoid taking alcohol as they contribute to the slowing down of the eyelid surgery healing

Eyelid surgery is usually safe, patients feel minimal pain during or after the surgery since local anesthesia with oral sedation or general anesthesia is given. After surgery, patients usually have minimal to moderate pain and we give them pain medicines for them to use at home like Paracetamol. Swollen and erythema that appear in the first week decrease with cold applications and therefore this application causes further analgesic effect.
Is eyelid surgery worth it?
Yes, eyelid surgery is worth it.
I can say that this operation enhances not only the cosmetic looks of the eyes but also the functionality of the eyes (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Blepharoplasty) Elimination of skin and fat accumulation that brings about sagginess as well as puffiness provides a good face appearance. From a functional level, it improves vision if there are barriers introduced by drooping eyelids. The increase in self-esteem and the new look the patients feel and appear to have is priceless. Second, the time to recover is quite short relative to the long-lasting effects of the procedures, making the endeavor worthwhile.
Is eyelid surgery safe in Turkey?
Yes, eyelid surgery is safe in Turkey; however, patients should strictly follow the doctor’s recommendations to avoid any complications.
Turkey is famous for its well-educated and experienced professionals who mostly have international degrees and significant work experience operating in the aesthetic surgery field. Turkey’s health facilities are well-developed and fitted with the newest technologies thus providing quality services. Pre-and-post-operative patient satisfaction and other favorable results are received by patients who willingly opt for the operation in Turkey.
How many years does a blepharoplasty last?
The functionality of blepharoplasty lasts around fifteen years.
However, it is vital to consider the following when determining the lasting impact of the surgery: skin type, genetic markers, and lifestyles. Lifestyle factors and others such as skin care, sun exposure, sharp fluctuations in weight, and smoking may decrease the longevity of eyelid surgery. Follow-up care after the session and a good skincare regime also help a lot in revitalizing the skin's surface.
Can I fly after blepharoplasty?
No, I do not recommend flying soon after blepharoplasty surgery.
One 4-7 days should be given before flying because this is the time required for the initial healing and also because of the changes in pressure in the cabin that can increase swelling and bleeding. From a medical point of view, the mode of transport that is by air may worsen the postoperative inflammation and pain hence prolonging the eyelid surgery recovery period. Patients can normally fly after this time though they are advised to have a check-up with their doctor to confirm that they have recovered.
Will I look younger after eyelid surgery?
Yes, you will appear to be younger after the eyelid surgery.
From the scientific perspective, all the procedures that aim at eradicating loose skin, and fat deposits and tightening the muscles around the eyes eliminate the signs of aging such as drooping eyelids and under-eye bags. Personally, after the surgical procedures, the patients appear to have a fresher and younger appearance because their eyes seem to be wider open.
Does eyelid skin grow back?
No, the eyelid skin does not regenerate after the operation is done.
As a surgeon, thus I can inform you that the skin and the fat deposits that are excised during the blepharoplasty surgery cannot be reclaimed. The surgery is done and is therefore irreversible, but the skin that is left has the usual lifespan and may therefore sag in the future or undergo other changes.
What is the success rate of eyelid surgery?
The success rate of eyelid surgery lies between 90-95%. Some of the reasons that can make it possible to have improvement include the surgeon, patient health status, and compliance with surgeon instructions on pre-and post-operative care. However the quality of the facility where the surgery is to be done and the capacity of the patient's skin to heal also heavily influence the decision.
Is blepharoplasty done on both eyes at once?
Yes, blepharoplasty is bilateral meaning that it is commonly practiced on both eyes simultaneously. It is preferable to do it for both eyes at once because thus it is more balanced and the procedure is quicker. Besides, one can avoid having to stem the healing process for a certain period as is the case with traditional surgeries.
